Nigerian Entertainment News: Yemi Alade shares how pretending about her age for three years led to depression
Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Yemi Alade has opened up about how concealing her real age for years once drove her into a period of depression
In a candid conversation with media personality Chude Jideonwo, the award-winning artist disclosed that she spent three years claiming to be 22 — only to later discover that she was, in fact, 25.
According to Yemi, this realisation deeply unsettled her, as she found it difficult to come to terms with the truth about her actual age.
“There was a time someone asked me how old I was, and for about three years I kept saying 22. Then one day I calculated it and realised I was already 25,” she said.
The singer admitted that the revelation had a significant impact on her mental state.
“I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it. It was mental — for three years, I didn’t know my age,” she added.
Reflecting on the experience, Yemi Alade explained that it taught her an important lesson about honesty and self-awareness, describing that phase as one of the most unusual periods of her life.
