Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has shed more light on the reasons behind her relocation to New York, addressing speculations that the move was solely driven by career growth or influence from her record label

During her chat with Hot 93.7, the 23-year-old star revealed that her choice was rooted in personal preference. She shared that New York has always felt like a second home to her.

Ayra Starr—who recently praised Wizkid, calling him the King of Afrobeats—mentioned that the city’s aura reminds her a lot of Lagos.

In her words:

“I really like it here. I might actually move here… It just felt amazing. New York reminds me of Lagos. The energy, the people, the African diaspora… I feel at home here.”

She further noted that performing in New York has consistently been a special experience for her, making the idea of relocating feel more like a natural progression rather than an abrupt decision.

Her move stirred discussions among fans who questioned whether she might be creating distance between herself, Nigeria, and the Afrobeats identity that shaped her music. Ayra Starr clarified that this is far from the truth.

Explaining her motive, she said:

“I moved to broaden my sound and just to make my people proud around the world. I want to carry my culture wherever I go.”
