Nigerian Entertainment News: Mixed Reactions as Singer Portable Gets Three-Month Jail Sentence
Nigerian Entertainment News is abuzz with reports of Habeeb Okikiola, popularly called Portable, facing legal heat once again
The controversial street-hop artist has been handed a three-month jail term, though he can opt to pay a ₦30,000 fine instead, following his conviction in Ogun State.
What Triggered the Jail Term?
Portable was convicted on three charges, including assaulting a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. The incident occurred in March 2023 at Odogwu Bar in Oke-Osa, Ilogbo, where he allegedly attacked Inspector Hammed Moshood, injuring the officer’s nose during the scuffle.
The matter gained renewed attention after the singer reportedly violated his bail terms, which led to his re-arrest and detention. The Magistrate Court in Ifo, Ogun State, eventually ruled on the case, offering either imprisonment or a monetary penalty of ₦30,000.
Online Buzz and Management’s Silence
This legal outcome has triggered diverse opinions on social media. While some Nigerians view the penalty as lenient, others argue that an assault on a police officer deserves harsher consequences. As of now, Portable’s management has remained tight-lipped, which has only fueled more online chatter and speculation.
Recurring Legal Challenges for Portable
This marks yet another legal saga for the embattled singer. In early 2024, he was involved in a ₦2 million bail dispute with the Ogun State government. More recently, he was also listed in a defamation case initiated by Fuji legend, Saheed Osupa.
Despite his ongoing legal woes, Portable continues to stay relevant in the Nigerian music space. Time will tell if these troubles will impact his career trajectory.
