Nigerian Entertainment News: Johnny Drille sheds light on the earnings disparity between Nigerian and UK music streams
Nigerian musician and producer, Johnny Drille, has shared insights into the financial realities faced by artists due to the relatively low revenue generated from music streams in Nigeria
Discussing the hurdles of building a career in music, Johnny Drille noted that African — particularly Nigerian — artists receive significantly less income from streaming platforms, mainly because of the reduced payout rate in the region.
In his words, 1 million streams originating from Nigeria might only yield about $300 for an artist, while the identical number of plays in a country like the UK could result in a much higher payout — up to $5,000.
He stated:
“For an artist, it can be quite challenging early on. Streaming from Africa is not the best in terms of numbers. I hear that if your 1 million streams are from Nigeria, it’s probably like $300. But the same 1 million streams from the UK, for example, could be about $5,000.”
Despite these limitations, Johnny Drille emphasized that performers can still earn significantly through concerts and stage appearances once their music begins to attract global listeners.
He motivated rising talents to remain determined and dedicated, saying:
“It might be tough early on, but if you believe this is your path, just keep pushing. At some point, it will happen for you.”
