Nigerian Entertainment News: DJ Cuppy Faces Backlash Over Independence Day Message – “Easy to Say When You’re a Billionaire’s Child”
As Nigeria celebrated its 65th Independence Day, popular Nigerian disc jockey and billionaire heiress, Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola — widely known as DJ Cuppy — posted a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter) in honor of the national holiday
In her message, DJ Cuppy expressed deep affection for the country, referring to Nigeria as her “home, birthplace, and nation.”
Part of her post read:
“God took His time creating us! He blessed us with strength and resilience. If I had another chance at life, I’d still choose to be Nigerian.”
While some social media users appreciated her patriotic tone, many others were quick to criticize her remarks.
Numerous commenters pointed out that Cuppy’s privileged background as the daughter of billionaire businessman Femi Otedola makes it easier for her to romanticize life in Nigeria — a country where many citizens grapple with poverty, inflation, and insecurity on a daily basis.
Her post has since sparked debate across various platforms in the Nigerian Entertainment News space, with opinions sharply divided between admiration and skepticism.
One X user, Mbojikwe, slammed her post, calling it insensitive:
“Cuppy, with all due respect, this statement is deeply insensitive. As someone born into immense privilege the daughter of a billionaire who doesn’t even reside in Nigeria full-time it’s clear you have little to no understanding of what the average Nigerian is enduring.”
He went on to highlight challenges such as a collapsing healthcare system, widespread insecurity, economic hardship, and lack of basic dignity.
