Nigerian Entertainment News: Tems Opens Up About Her Early Career Challenges – “It Was Really Hard To Get People To Take Me Seriously”
Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Temilade Openiyi, widely recognized by her stage name Tems, has candidly shared the obstacles she encountered at the beginning of her musical journey
In an exclusive conversation with CNN, the 30-year-old singer-songwriter revealed that she struggled to earn recognition and respect during the initial stages of her career. She mentioned feeling unsupported and overlooked for a long period.
Tems, known for her soulful sound and powerful lyrics, highlighted the importance of staying true to herself.
“For me, staying authentic is everything,” she stated. “That’s the one thing I can’t trade — it’s all I have, my true identity.”
Reflecting on her past, she added,
“It was extremely challenging to get people to take me seriously — not only as a music producer but also as a vocalist. I didn’t feel secure, acknowledged, or uplifted for a long time.”
As part of her mission to change the narrative, Tems spoke about her empowerment initiative, The Leading Vibe. Through this platform, she aims to offer the kind of opportunities she lacked early in her own career.
She explained that the program focuses on promoting and supporting women in behind-the-scenes roles within the music industry.
“There are countless gifted women who have the potential to become producers, engineers, or managers, but they often remain unseen,” she said. “I want to bring them into the spotlight and reshape how women are perceived in music.”
Tems also revealed plans to expand the initiative beyond Nigeria, announcing Kenya as the next destination.
“There are talented women everywhere who just want to be acknowledged. All they need is a platform — that one chance. I truly believe this could transform the industry globally.”
