Nigerian Entertainment News: “I Nearly Died” – Bracket’s Vast Opens Up About His Cancer Ordeal
Popular Nigerian musician Nwachukwu Ozioko, famously known as Vast from the music duo Bracket, has shared emotional details about his intense health struggle in 2013, when he was diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of blood cancer
During an appearance on the AFRIMMA Podcast, Vast reflected on the traumatic experience, describing it as one of the most unforgettable chapters of his life.
He praised his team for rallying around him during that dark time, both emotionally and financially.
“It was a time in my life I will never forget. The people around me showed me love. Normally after making money everyone gets their cut but during this period, everyone on the team brought their money together to treat me,” he said.
Vast revealed that while dealing with cancer was tough, it was the treatment that pushed him to the brink.
“Cancer is not the problem, it’s the treatment. The process is deadly. They started with my spine and I don’t even know what they did to it. I was also asked to sign a form that if anything happens to me, I can’t hold them responsible.
“I nearly passed from the treatment. At some point, I lost so much blood that it affected my heart and I had to be admitted for blood transfusion.
“I was very skinny that you could see my ribs. It also made us spend a lot of money,” Vast recounted.
Vast also mentioned that initial tests failed to identify the problem. It wasn’t until a nurse suggested an ultrasound that doctors discovered a suspicious growth. Further evaluations in the UK confirmed it to be cancer.
“They ran several tests but still couldn’t find anything. It was a nurse who suggested doing an ultrasound, and that was when they discovered a growth spreading in my body. It was later in the UK that it was confirmed to be cancerous,” he added.
His bandmate Smash spoke about the shock of the diagnosis, especially since Vast had always been health-conscious. According to him, the delay in identifying the illness worsened the situation.
“After a while of him not looking himself, he went to one of the biggest hospitals in Victoria Island, Lagos. They started with blood samples but couldn’t treat him because they didn’t know what was wrong,” Smash explained.
“Meanwhile, we had a performance scheduled in Burkina Faso, but due to Vast’s condition, we sent the payment to Flavour to take our place.
“They claimed they sent the sample in September, but by December there was still no feedback. I had to confront the doctor and warned that he would be held accountable if anything happened. That’s when we were advised to fly him overseas,” Smash explained.
This touching story adds to the depth of Nigerian Entertainment News, showing not just the glamour, but also the real-life battles artists sometimes face behind the scenes.
